Understanding Redistricting and Why it Matters

​Across the country, including here in Kansas and Missouri, states are redrawing congressional districts in what’s known as redistricting. While the process is meant to ensure fair representation based on population changes, it often becomes highly partisan, with political parties seeking to shape maps in their favor — a practice called gerrymandering.

Redistricting typically follows each census (every 10 years), but some states are now changing maps mid-decade, a trend raising concern over fairness and equity, especially for communities of color. When districts are drawn to “pack” or “split” minority populations, it can dilute their voting power and weaken their representation.
